Sustainable Stool Born from Electronic Appliance Packaging Waste | Edgar Stool

FDT Bureau

In the realm of product development and design, there exists a community of innovators who continually seek to reimagine everyday objects, often overlooked in our daily lives. Among them are those who not only aim to enhance functionality but also prioritize reducing our environmental footprint through thoughtful material choices. Chairs and stools, seemingly mundane items, have become the focus of such innovation. Enter the Edgar Stool, a conceptual creation that embodies both practicality and sustainability by Razeen Mohammed. Conceived with the goal of minimizing resource usage, energy consumption, and production costs, this portable stool stands as a testament to ingenuity. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Remarkably, the development cost of the Edgar Stool was a mere $0.29 per prototype—a feat achieved by utilizing waste materials sourced from electronic appliance packaging and adhesives. This resourceful approach not only addresses the mounting issue of electronic waste but also demonstrates the potential for creative reuse.

Crafted from repurposed packaging materials, the stool appears lightweight and portable. However, the stool’s design may raise questions regarding its stability and weight-bearing capacity for accommodating fully grown individuals remains uncertain. Potential discomfort, particularly for those with a larger physique, may also be a concern.
