Sustainable Fabrics - Trending Upholstery Fabrics in Luxury Furniture Market

Often, designers work with different fabrics and textiles to create their preferred look by selecting materials with innovation. In fact, sustainable fashion materials have increasingly emerged, ranging from vegan leather alternatives to bio-based materials in luxury goods. “Fabric companies are constantly evolving to accommodate the latest requirements and variants of fabric that are trending. The consideration of furniture and fabric combined make for the bulk of appeal of interior design, so it is essential to understand and know them in detail to highlight each one of them,” educates Aparna. Designers unanimously agreed upon the popularity of Boucle fabric in luxury furniture market these days. Boucle fabric is a heavy material which is woven or knitted with natural looped yarn. Srikanth Verma believes that there is impact of media also in the fabric choices. “Application based fabrics are gaining traction to suit the user’s lifestyle. Also, culture and media is influencing the fabric choices of people, wanting to make their homes achieve their aspirational values, for eg. rage of Boucle fabric.

Witnessing the increasing demands for sustainable fabrics, Sachin & Neha Gupta - Founders & Interior Designers, Beyond Designs remarks, “There is a definite preference for natural materials, as today people are more aware of the ill effects of synthetic materials. Linen, cotton, velvet, silk, jute, and such fabrics will always be popular. Aesthetically, exotic prints depicting charming florals, fantastic wildlife and garden scapes, eye-catching geometric patterns are big.” “Natural and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are trending because of their long-lasting nature, breathability and classy appeal. “Also, jute and burlap used innovatively for upholstery and curtains to add soft organic touch to the interiors,” tells Shami Goregaoker. “More organic materials like linen, cotton and wool have made a huge comeback during the pandemic. These natural materials are sustainable, extremely durable, and add a subtle and classy look while lending a cozy vibe, shares Devika Khosla & Raj Khosla.

In agreement to this statement, Rashi Bothra and Ruchi Gehani - Founders & Interior Designers, Azure Interiors specifies, “Anti- stain, Water – repellent & less absorbent fabrics are popular as these can be used even in the most used spaces like living area sofa.”

Adding to it, Sajal Lamba, co-founder & director of Wriver, shares, “Material innovation that promotes overall well-being is one of the biggest trends thisyear. Easy-to-maintain, organic materials that infuse a sense of holistic wellness takecentre stage. High-quality fabrics such as suede, leather, silk, wool, or even the humble cotton and jute. It’s all about finishing define the luxury furniture segment.

All of these fabrics provide a touch of warmth to the interiors.” Saba Kapoor, Co-founder & Designer, Nivasa also points out the demand for performance fabrics as they are easy to clean and scratch proof. Will the demand for sustainable furnishings persistent in future as well? “Functionality and aesthetics make modern-day furniture more comfortable. Hence natural, sustainable materials and contemporary designs infused with ethnic touches will be huge. Natural and organic materials will seemore traction in the coming year,” shares Ar Anupriya Sahu.

Ar. Harpreet Singh, Founder, Aann Space mentions that the most popular luxury interior fabrics they use in their most of projects are Silk Cashmere, Pima Cotton, Leather, Satin, Brocade, Corduroy, Velvet Calico, Canvas, Terry and Taffeta”
