Sustainability presents both a challenge and an opportunity for design, with a focus on utilizing recycled, recyclable and circular materials. As the European agenda for 2030 emphasizes, meeting targets and addressing challenges are crucial for a sustainable future. Italy leads in ecological transition policies, embracing sustainability as a key focus for Made in Italy. Innovative materials are pivotal for sustainable design. At the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024, various companies showcased products made from recycled and recyclable materials. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
Magis introduced In-side, a collection of rotationally molded seats using bio-plastics and recycled polymers. Slalom presented sound-absorbing partitions made from recycled plastic, while Saviola showcased panels made from recycled wood. Cimento utilized waste aggregates to create evocative materials, and Feathers from discarded cushions were repurposed for chairs.
Furthermore, highly recyclable materials like aluminium were used by designers like Ronan Bouroullec for Kettal’s Passage chair, which is entirely stackable and customizable. Arper introduced Catifa Carta, crafted from paper sheets bonded with natural resin, promoting composting at the end of its lifecycle. Another approach to sustainability is designing for simplicity, reusability and easy disassembly. Magis’s Tacito sideboard and Very Simple Kitchen’s kitchens simplify replacements and repairs. MDF Italia’s Array sofa system, designed by Snohetta, focuses on transportability and configurability to ease assembly and disposal.
In addition to products, pavilion layouts at the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 were designed with sustainability in mind. Guidelines encourage low-impact installations with an emphasis on recycling and reuse. Debonamedeo utilized paper rolls for columns in its installation, while Sancal used fabric scraps to cover scaffolding tubes, minimizing waste. Knoll’s pavilion, designed by OFFICE, Salem van der Swaagh and Pernilla Ohrsted, recreated a reusable domestic space with aluminum profiles and glass partitions. By embracing sustainable materials and design principles, the Salone del Mobile.Milano contributed to a greener and more sustainable future.
