Layer Designs a Foamless, Modular and Sustainable Mattress | Mazzu Open

FDT Bureau

British design studio Layer recently collaborated with Chinese start-up Mazzu to revolutionize mattress design with sustainability in mind. The result is the Mazzu Open mattress, a modular and foamless product comprising textile-covered springs. This innovative design offers the comfort of traditional sprung mattresses while being adaptable, repairable and easy to pack and move, extending its lifespan. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

The Mazzu Open mattress features individually textile-wrapped pocket springs arranged between a base matrix and a cushioned topper, all constructed without glue. Its open structure allows for hygienic maintenance, enabling users to inspect and clean each component individually. The modular design allows buyers to customize the firmness of each spring, akin to treating them like pixels. Users can also personalize their respective sides of the bed. Moreover, additional spring modules and different components can be added or removed to adjust the mattress’s size, making it highly versatile.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the mattress components are either recyclable or biodegradable. The absence of polyurethane foam, a common mattress material, contributes to environmental friendliness. Instead, hourglass-shaped springs wrapped in 3D-knit polyester sleeves provide comfort and support. The wool used for the topper is biodegradable, while other materials like steel and ABS plastic are recyclable. Reportedly, the development process involved extensive collaboration over three years, with the studio experimenting with various connection techniques to ensure simplicity, comfort and cost-effectiveness.
