During Milan Design Week, Bentley Home unveiled a coffee table called the Thames table, in collaboration with Italian company Paper Factor and designer Frederico Peri. The table has a smooth, veined surface resembling marble but it is actually made from an innovative evolution of papier-mache. Here is more on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The solid surface material is made from cellulose fibres that are made by Paper Factor and are combined with glues, natural pigments, and non-toxic, water-based binders. The material completely avoids the use of plastics and fossil fuels and is produced through a cold production process that requires minimal heat, resulting in no emissions being released into the environment. Even the wastewater is reused to make the next round of raw compounds. The table is created by layering the material over a wooden frame and is processed until it is dry and hard. Later the table is sanded down to a shiny finish.
According to Cavaciocchi, the material is light, durable and has a class 1 anti-scratch protective coating. Reportedly, the Thames table will be rolled out more widely in Bentley’s collections in 2023. Despite the fact that the material cannot be recycled as paper at the end of its life, it is very low-waste and can be returned to Paper Factor for recycling as a secondary raw material.
