Innovative Clay-Padded Chaise Lounge Crafted from Repurposed Clay

FDT Bureau

French studio Niveau Zero Atelier has ingeniously repurposed waste clay from construction sites across Paris, employing a meticulous process to transform it into the core padding of a groundbreaking chaise lounge showcased at the Collectible design fair in Brussels. Encased in clear plastic, the clay, kept moist within the vacuum-sealed sheath, conforms to the body of the sitter, reminiscent of Play-Doh’s pliability. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Complementing the clay’s natural pale green hue, the daybed features a minimalist base crafted from recycled stainless steel, offering an industrial yet environmentally conscious aesthetic. The concept challenges the conventional norms and sparks intriguing conversations within the design realm. Obtained from suburban construction sites, the illite clay undergoes an extensive refining process, removing impurities to render it suitable for use. The labor-intensive method involves multiple rinsing and filtering cycles before the clay is encapsulated in the plastic envelope. Utilizing advanced sealing techniques, the studio ensures the clay remains wet and pliable, enhancing the comfort and functionality of the daybed.

Detailing reminiscent of traditional Chesterfield upholstery adorns the front of the daybed, adding a touch of elegance to its industrial-inspired design. The studio’s experimentation with clay extends beyond upholstery, encompassing ceramic production showcased in smaller pillows, seat cushions, and vases, further exploring the material’s versatility. Commissioned by Relay Design Projects, the Soft Soil daybed exemplifies the collaboration’s commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring unconventional materials and processes.
