Kyoto-based architecture and design studio 2m26 recently ingeniously crafted a portable restaurant using locally-sourced Hinoki cypress timber. This compact dining establishment, envisioned for rural areas in Japan, reportedly can accommodate up to four diners while also providing space for the chef and cooking equipment. Inspired by the traditional Yatai food karts seen in Japanese public walkways and markets during the Edo period, 2m26 sought to create a unique experience by allowing diners to share the same space as the chef, immersing them in the cooking process firsthand.
The restaurant structure cleverly integrates facilities for both cooking and dining. It incorporates storage compartments for ingredients, kitchenware, cooking implements, gas canisters and stools, which can all be neatly stored within the cart’s body when not in use.
The Hinoki cypress body of the cart features a gently pitched roof and is flanked by two shelving units, providing storage space and privacy. A metal frame encompasses the cart, housing two large wheels and a maneuvering bar, enabling easy transportation between different locations.
The tabletop incorporates extendable sides, allowing for additional counter space during food preparation and expanded table space for customers. The pitched roof can be extended as well, providing shade from the sun and protection from rain.
