Innovation and Practicality Blend to form this Lamp

FDT Bureau

Designer Thomas Albertsen’s Grasp portable lamp for Danish brand Frandsen first gained recognition when it was created for the TV show Denmark’s Next Classic. Initially introduced as part of a lighting design competition on the reality TV show, the Grasp lamp stood out as one of the top designs, catching the attention of Frandsen. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT). Frandsen saw the potential in Albertsen’s innovative design, which features a refined metal structure consisting of two cones – one for the base and the other for the lampshade – connected by a slender, curved rod that serves as both the body and the handle of the lamp. This design not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also offers practicality. The Grasp portable lamp is designed with a minimalist aesthetic, ensuring it fits seamlessly into various environments. It’s also highly practical, boasting a water resistance rating that makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Additionally, its stable base ensures it can sit securely on both smooth and uneven surfaces. One of the most notable features of the Grasp lamp is its bulb, known as the Frandsen One. This unique bulb serves as both the light source and power unit, allowing users to simply remove and replace it with a fully charged spare when needed, rather than having to recharge the entire lamp. The Grasp lamp comes in several iterations, including the Grasp Wall, a wall-mounted sconce lamp, and the Grasp Garden Spear, designed with a pointed base for direct insertion into the ground. Both these versions feature the same cone-shaped shade and innovative Frandsen One lightbulb as the original table lamp. The Grasp portable lamp is crafted from metal and is available in various colours and finishes, including Black, White, Beetroot, Petrol and Brass. With dimensions of 470mm and 720mm, the lamp offers versatility and style for any space. Image credit: Thomas Albertsen and Frandsen
