This Ply-Made Collapsible Pendant Light is Compact and Sustainable | Espina Pendant

FDT Bureau

Architect and furniture designer Guillermo Cameron Mac Lean has drawn inspiration from the concertina shape of musical instruments to craft the Espina Pendant lamp for Spanish brand Estepa, demonstrating a novel take on sustainable design. The Espina Pendant is ingeniously designed to minimize both its spatial footprint and material usage. This innovative approach not only reduces the environmental impact during shipping but also enhances resource efficiency in production. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

The Espina Pendant’s collapsible design empowers users to easily transform the flat-packed lampshade into its final 3D form. Crafted from a single sheet of plywood, the lampshade incorporates a spiraled pattern that mimics the concertina effect when suspended from the central point of the sheet. At the core, a hollow space accommodates the cord and the fixture, ensuring stability and functionality. The lampshade is conveniently nestled within a square wooden frame in its compact state, while essential components such as the cord, canopy and pendant holder are smartly positioned along the frame’s edges.

A thoughtful handle cutout in one corner offers user-friendly portability, thus making purchase and transport hassle-free. Given the well-documented environmental concerns associated with the transportation of design industry goods, the Espina Pendant represents a progressive shift. Its intentionally space-efficient design and minimal raw material usage not only ensure convenience and aesthetic appeal but also align with sustainable practices.

The Espina Pendant boasts an extended lifespan, easy recyclability and an engaging flat packaging concept. This sustainable and space-saving approach has earned the design the prestigious Seal of Good Design.
