COVID-19: IKEA Temporarily Closes Its Only Store in India

IKEA, Swedish furniture giant announced that its only store in India located in Hyderbad will be closed due to coronavirus outbreak. Company will be closed its Hyderabad store for all customers from today, 30th March, Friday, 3 pm onwards to until further notice in this regards. It’s a precautionary measure taken by IKEA to safeguard employees and customers. Although, Customers in the city will be able to shop online, said Ikea. 

IKEA opened its state of art store spread over 4 lakh sq ft in Hyderabad on 9th August 2018.  People of India show their overwhelming welcome to Ikea at the time of its inception in India. According to company, till the completion of one year of store opening, a total of 4 million shoppers have visited this store in Hyderabad. For FY-2019, IKEA enjoyed business of Rs 400 crores in India.

Peter Betzel, CEO IKEA, said in an official statement that "We have been listening to the advice of the Indian government, guidance from our global group and customer and co-worker feedback. We have taken a day-by-day and hour-by-hour approach, evolving our assessments and decisions as new information becomes available. We are evaluating and making decisions based on the local situation”. 

Employees have already been asked to work from home. "We ask all co-workers at our Navi Mumbai IKEA store build-up who are dependent on public transport, to work from home and we will continue the dialogue about how best to protect co-worker's wellbeing whilst enabling our work and ambitions to continue. Employees who support online fulfilment will have strong measures and hygiene practices to ensure the work environment is clean and sanitized, and working at a safe social distance", said Betzel. 

Due to Covid-19 outbreak, IKEA has already shut operations temporarily in China, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland, and the United States.
