Ikea Introduces VAXELBRUK Collection Made from Recycled Coworker Uniforms

FDT Bureau

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on supporting brands that prioritize sustainability and incorporate practices like upcycling and recycling into their production processes. Recognizing the importance of responsible consumption, Ikea is making strides to win over eco-conscious consumers with its latest lifestyle line crafted from materials sourced from within its own ranks. The Swedish furniture giant is set to unveil its newest collection, dubbed VAXELBRUK, which boasts a unique origin story. The collection is crafted from recycled coworker uniforms that were slated for disposal when Ikea introduced new attire in 2020. Instead of discarding these garments, Ikea innovatively repurposed them into new products, diverting a staggering 300 tonnes of material from ending up in landfills. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Despite retaining the iconic yellow and blue hues synonymous with Ikea, the brand has managed to tone down the colours significantly without resorting to dyeing the textiles, a process that is both costly and resource-intensive. The VAXELBRUK collection comprises 16 textile-based items, including throw pillows, bags, cushion covers and curtains, all crafted from the repurposed uniform material.

While the collection predominantly features textiles derived from old uniforms, Ikea has also incorporated other recycled materials, such as polyester from used PET bottles, to enhance durability and sustainability. Additionally, some faulty new uniforms have been included in the production process, ensuring that no material goes to waste and helping to temper the brightness of the colors.

What sets the VAXELBRUK collection apart is not just its aesthetic appeal but also its fascinating backstory. While these products may appear like typical Ikea offerings to the casual observer, knowing their origin adds an intriguing layer of depth. The VAXELBRUK collection, aptly named for its interchangeable and sustainable design, had been scheduled for release in February 2024 across Ikea stores in Europe, offering consumers an opportunity to embrace eco-friendly living without compromising on style or quality.
