350 Hand-Burnt Wooden Stools Emerge as Icons of Resilience at Milan Fashion Week

FDT Bureau

The Bottega Veneta Autumn Winter 2024 womenswear show at Milan Fashion Week showcased a striking set design featuring a special edition of Le Corbusier’s LC14 Cabanon stool, uniquely crafted in burnt wood. Informed by the essence of southern Italy, the fashion house meticulously created 350 of these wooden stools, each hand-burnt using a traditional Japanese scorching technique. This method, also employed for the catwalk floor, lent a distinctive aesthetic to the entire presentation. Here is a detailed report on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Enhancing the scorched-wood ambiance were impressive Murano glass sculptures resembling giant flowering cacti, strategically placed throughout the show space. According to Bottega Veneta, the set aimed to evoke feelings of resilience and hope, symbolized by the rugged beauty of the scorched elements. The symbolism behind the choice of materials stated that the cactus grows where nothing else can grow.

Collaborating with Italian manufacturer Cassina and Fondation Le Corbusier, Bottega Veneta applied the scorched-wood finish to the LC14 Cabanon stools, providing natural protection while highlighting the distinct patterns of the wood grain, resulting in each stool being truly unique. The stool’s journey began as a simple whiskey box repurposed by Le Corbusier, transforming into a legendary piece of furniture. The stool showcases elegance, rooted in simplicity, honesty and resilience.
